Charm Modern Thai Closes it’s Doors

15 Nov

One of my favorite places to get panang curry has closed! I didn’t even get to say goodbye! Owner Desmond Chen, announced today that Charm Modern Thai has been sold. The restaurant’s last day of service was Sunday November 13, 2011.  The new owners take over on November 16 and the room will reopen on a later date with a totally different concept.

“It’s hard to believe that it was only three years ago that I opened CHARM Modern Thai,” said Desmond Chen.  “Although located on a notoriously difficult stretch of Hamilton Street, we developed a loyal following. Although the restaurant was not on the market, the new owners recognized CHARM’s success as an asset and they presented an excellent offer and quick completion.”

Key staff and management from CHARM will find employment within the Thai House Restaurant Group. CHARM executive chef Samnan Kamonroek will make the move to Pink Elephant Thai joining chef Parichat Poomkajorn in turning out traditional Thai favorites and innovative Thai creations.

I will have to just stick to Pink Elephant Thai which is really delicious so I don’t mind!

Pink Elephant Thai Brings the Heat

9 Jun

I was lucky enough to attend a really fun evening at Pink Elephant Thai on Alberni St. in Downtown Vancouver. Pink Elephant Thai is the latest location for restauranteur, Desmond Chen who also owns Charm Modern Thai in Yaletown, Thai House in Yaletown, Urban Thai in Yaletown and Thai House on Robson St. to name a few.

Pink Elephant Thai is very very PINK! Men, don’t let it fool you! Although the decor is very feminine the food is most certainly not. Filled with non stop punch, heat and flavour everything I tasted was incredible.

We started the evening off with some appetizers. They graciously made me some crispy tofu! It was really fabulous! The silken tofu in the center was surrounded by a light crispy batter that exploded with a salty flavour that went perfectly with the spicy chili sauce that it was served with. I would get this again for sure.

The non vegetarians had some gorgeous Spicy Butterfly Butter Jumbo Tiger Prawns. These looked amazing and apparently tasted that way too.

Next up was the floating market and lettuce wraps. I didn’t get to taste the lettuce wraps as they were made with free range ostrich and oyster, but the others were really enjoying them. I had my own personal veggie floating market that was delicious! Who knew you could tempura a single leaf of spinach!

We then moved on to some amazing mains! I was lucky to have a couple of dishes made for me completely vegetarian. The Panang Curry and Pad Thai. The Pad Thai wasn’t as delicious as I had hoped, but the Panang Curry was OUTSTANDING! The spice, the coconut MMM! GET THIS!

Some other items I didnt get to try:

Khao Mun Gai
Singapore style chicken with ginger rice

Coconut Curry

My favorite item of the night was the pinky martini! This was amazing!!! Pinky vodka is infused with Rose and then they mix it with cranberry juice and leche juice. Its really a great flavour. I am not a martini girl but I loved this!

It was great seeing some old friends and making some new ones!

They have these HUGE Singha Beer towers. I think they hold about 7-9 beers? Great for a big party or watching the game!

The Gorgeous chef, and this lovely man whose name escapes me. He has the most precious dog!

we ran in to Adrian Eden and Lindsay Blunt! It was his birthday! PINK CHAMPAGNE!

Thank you to Desmond and the amazing staff for a great night, and to Tanis for putting things together!
