Vancouver Aquarium Features Luminesence Nov. 24th-Jan 2nd

7 Dec

I was lucky enough to be invited to a preview of Luminesence at the Vancouver Aquarium a couple of weeks ago to see the amazing Jelly Swarm! As part of Luminescence- a celebration of aquatic light, the Vancouver Aquarium commissioned Tangible Intervention and origami artist Joseph Wu to create and art installation that would awe our visitors. They created Jelly Swarm, a masterpiece of over 100 origami jellies with LED lights covering the entire ceiling of the entrance gallery.

This installation took three months of detailed planning, plus 15 hours of overnight install shifts! The software for the lights and the complex structure that the jellies hang from are all completely unique and bespoke and made entirely for the Aquarium.

Take a look:

Check out this amazing video of the making of Jelly Swarm

We also got to experience their awesome 4D theatre! Without revealing too much we got to wear awesome 3d glasses and were sprayed with SNOW! It was amazing!

They also featured two electric eels who were lighting up a Christmas tree!

Of course I had to get in on the action.

Luminesence – A celebration of aquatic light is on from November 24th to January 2nd

From the Vancouver Aquarium website

“Looking for new and unique ways to enjoy the festive season this year? Then visit Luminescence and discover how animals create and reflect light through special exhibits and shows.

Visit the Aquarium’s traditional holiday tree, powered by the help of two electric eels! These amazing animals are one of only a few species in the world that can discharge a huge jolt of electricity. See the eels in action at one of the daily shows and witness a dazzling display of light each time the eels feed.

You can then immerse yourself in Jelly Swarm, a unique light installation created by Tangible Intervention in collaboration with origami artist, Joseph Wu. Over a hundred jellies with LED lights will fill the entire ceiling of a gallery. Control the lighting yourself at the touch of a button and create beautiful patterns of light throughout the amazing swarm hanging above you. Then take part in glow in the dark arts and crafts activities or make your very own origami jelly decoration to take home with you.”

It was awesome to walk around the aquarium and see some of the other animals too!

The whole experience was awesome! Who doesn’t love the aquarium? Make sure to check this show out over your Christmas holidays!

Some of My Favourite Long Weekend Activities

17 May

As you know, the long weekend is coming up and I know for most of us sometimes figuring out what to do is a bit of a challenge. I myself will be heading off to Victoria to see my friends and family and I am planning to do excessive amounts of sleeping and also eating. YIPPEE! Not to mention snuggling with these gigantic muffins

I have my weekend all sorted out, but there are some things happening in Vancouver that I am sad to be missing, or things that I love to do and I am sad I wont get to this long weekend. Here are some of my fav things to do or events that I wish I could attend!

#1 Hip Hop Dance Class at Harbour Dance Centre
Eric Malapad is one of my favourite teachers in Vancouver. He will really bring out the best in you and make you really let go and have fun. If you want to sweat and gain a few new moves, take Eric’s class.
Sunday at 12:30 (intro) or 1:30 (level 1)

#2 Go Watch Bridesmaids Again
Seriously this movie is hilarious. If you are feeling down, or just want to sit and laugh for a couple hours go watch this movie. I would seriously spend an another afternoon or evening watching this again. Check the showtimes

# 3 Naughty By Nature Plays Bar None May 22nd
Come ON!This show is going to be awesome. Not such a big fan of Bar None (snobby people working there!!!) BUT I would go for this. I am SO sad to be missing this event. Are you going?? Lucky jerk! Get tickets

#4 Go to BOGO at Payless
They have so many cute girls shoes right now! Perfect little slips ons for spring. At buy one get one half price you cannot go wrong. Alright, I guess I can also do this in Victoria but seriously! There are some DEALS right now as some of the spring stuff is getting cleared out and the summer stuff arrives. Don’t miss out! Should I also mention that Joe Fresh has $8 t shirts?! Get on that people!

#5 Get a car from Car2Go and head over to Lighthouse Park (with a stop on the way back in to downtown at the Bakehouse of course!)
If you don’t know about Car2Go yet you gotta check them out. Its a great way to get a car inexpensively for a short period of time. You just drop it off in a designated area when you’re done and the Car2Go people take care of gas and all the rest! Check out more about them HERE
I LOVE Lighthouse Park! Its gorgeous there! Such a great place to go on a hiking trip and amazing views of the city. Grab your camera, grab the dog and take a hike!
Anytime I head over that way I have to go to the Bakehouse. They have the most INSANE bread (I think it’s actually a bread made of beer?!) its slightly sweet and just amazing. They have the best salad, sandwiches, chili, insane cookies and pastries and just yumminess all around. perfect stop on the way back in to town after a long hike! Check them out

#6 Go play records, read crazy books, play musical instruments and eat at Prophouse Cafe
If you have still not been to Prophouse Cafe yet then GO!!! It’s an insane ride to another planet. Adaline Scavenger Hunt

4 Oct

This past Saturday October 2nd, was the street team event for Adaline! It was an amazing scavenger hunt which started out at the Peak’s office and went all day through downtown. There were about 7 teams in total, and all the teams had to solve clues given at certain check points and also complete other challenges along the way. Some of these challenges included, giving flowers to strangers, taking an embarrassing photo with “Adaline” (cardboard cutouts of her head!), chalk VOTE ADALINE all over the city, and other things of this nature. Luckily we were blessed with a gorgeous day and tons of great people which made the long day seem much shorter! Here are a few photos of the amazing event. Also check out @adalinefans on twitter to view ALL the photos from the day (there were hundreds!) or search hashtag #peakpp

Robyn coming to Vancouver!

Back in the 90’s I loved “Show me Love” by Robyn, but after a couple of songs she kind of disappeared. Well she is back and better than ever. She is currently on repeat on my iPod and I am so thrilled that she will be coming to Vancouver this November.
She will be hitting Venue on November 19th, 2010! Tickets go on sale this Saturday!

Check out her video for her latest single “hang with me”

I seriously recommend picking up her latest album you will not stop dancing!
